Yep, Google is still being used by people, daily.
So, as a business owner, thinking about how to be present on Google is still important.
Websites, Google Business Profiles, even Google Ads - they all have their place.
At the moment, in quiet economic times, people are researching longer and holding onto money longer, so being near the top of Google is probably MORE important than ever.
The goal of THIS article is to give YOU, a business owner with a website, a starting point for your own SEO (rank your website higher on Google) work, so you can get stuck in to this vital work for free.
For your website, to get the best possible position on Google, work through these 7 things:
1️⃣ Title Tag (meta title for page)
The meta title or title tag is a key piece of information (as seen above).
Most Google professionals say it's THE most important factor Google looks at when deciding who ranks where on Google.
Make sure that your Meta Title (as seen above in the image) is in line with what you want to rank on Google for.
Reach out if you are unsure what this should be, or if you unsure how to change it.
We’ve also often referred to this as your business “Bullseye Phrase”, or “the thing your best customers are most likely to put into Google when searching for your type of business”.
2️⃣ H1 heading (main heading on the page)
Google also takes a look at the headers on a page, the main header, or H1 header, in particular.
If the page you are trying to rank has your keyword in the Meta Title, and now the H1 header, we are off to a great start!
Each page on a website should only have one H1 header, and it should be similar to the Meta Title or BullsEye Phrase. Again, if unsure what your H1 is, or how to change it, feel free to contact us HERE.
3️⃣ First Paragraph of article or page info
Google is more or less reading your article or page and looking for hints up the top, for what the article or page is about.
We advise you to have your key phrase in the first paragraph.
For example, the article above was regarding the “Google 3 Pack”, an older term for a top 3 listing on Google Business Profile, so we included that phrase in paragraph 1.
4️⃣ The URL
If you can include your keywords as part of your URL, Google will appreciate you!
In fact, we’ve seen significant Google rankings results (and of course that turned into leads and sales) simply by publishing good content, not great, that had a good URL, therefore ranking high on Google very quickly.
Obviously, for existing websites this might be difficult, however you can use this strategy for new blog articles or pages on the website.
5️⃣ Headings and Subheadings
Further down the page, under the single H1 heading, you’ll have subheadings.
These should also contain the keyword or phrase you are trying to rank for, OR related phrases that support the main phrase.
In my example above, the article is about Google Reviews.
Generally, the subheadings, in the case above H2 headers, are related to the H1 and support that phrase so that Google understands what the article or page is about.
6️⃣ Alt text and image name for images
You can add “alt text” to images on your website, and the words you use can have an impact on your SEO.
The name you assign the images also counts when it comes to Google deciding who to rank where.
This step is not as important as the above steps, but it still counts, and is worth doing.
7️⃣ Body Text
You’ll see here in the review article, the word “review” appears often, but in a natural way, and in the context of the article.
