Last year, we did a one off SEO (Rank higher on Google) job for a client, which helped improve his website from page 8 of Google, to page 2, in 27 days.
The entire process is explained below.
It was for a Mortgage Advisor / Mortgage Broker in a town in New Zealand with over 100,000 residents.
Now you might be thinking…..
Page 2 of Google still gets no hits…
Correct.
However, the client was able to keep working with some tips from us, and got onto page 1 a few months later.
Let’s walk you through what we did.
Perhaps you can apply the lessons to your business.
📌 Yes - this process is also the same as our “Hey Google” service - contact us HERE if you want us to do this for you.
Step 1:
This was more like a “pre-seo” step.
We changed his “bullseye phrase” - from “Mortgage Advisor” to “Mortgage Broker”.
In the Mortgage game, Advisor is the correct term now, but we did the keyword research using KWFinder - and discovered that “broker” had 7 times as much Google search traffic, as what “advisor” does.
Here is what KWFinder looks like:
We can’t live without it.
It gives us info on search volume, difficulty to rank on Google and other useful information.
You can get it HERE - free versions available. 👈 click here
So the strategy was to focus on “Mortgage Broker”, while still making sure the correct term of advisor was used too.
From that point on, we’d be using “Mortgage Broker {town}” as the target phrase, anchor phrase, or what we call BullsEye Phrase.

Step 2:
We optimised his Google Business Profile for that BullsEye Phrase.
The entire process is right here:
If that video is too long, you can check out our YouTube channel for shorter videos that will teach you enough to get a quick win on Google Business Profile.
We’ve proven it many times… if you improve a Google Business Profile for a phrase, that will also help rank the main website higher on Google.
Step 3:
We created some new digital assets for him.
A YouTube channel with 3 short videos about mortgages and real estate in his town.
A LinkedIn company page with 3 posts and 3 articles.
We looked at his Instagram and Facebook and ensured they were also optimised for the BullsEye Phrase.
Step 4:
Our Local Citations contractor stepped in for a few hours.
He ensure that the client’s website was correctly listed on the top 10 business directories for NZ.
This is important because Google gleans information from these sites. If they aren’t done, or are done poorly, it’s harder to rank a website high on Google.
Step 5:
We reviewed his website for BullsEye Phrase (BEP) usage.
We made sure that his “money pages” (home page and contact us page) were optimised.
This process is explained in this previous newsletter HERE. 👈 click here
Things like usage of the BEP on the page, in the headings, and in the meta title (that’s a biggie).
Step 6:
Internal linking.
We ensured that each page and blog post linked to at least 3 other pages on the site, including the contact us page.
We created links on blog posts, to other blog posts too.
This step is best explained as “we made the blog look like Wikipedia” with links to itself throughout.
Step 7:
We ran technical checks on the site. It needed to be faster, so we hired a guy to make it faster.
If you need that, let us know.
We have an excellent contractor based here in NZ who does these.
Google doesn’t like slow websites.
If you want to check your website speed, use GTmetrix HERE. 👈 click here
Step 8:
We paid a contractor for some “web 2.0” links, pointing to both his website and his Google Business Profile link.
These add authority to your website.
If you want this done you can either do your own research, or ask us.
Step 9:
We wrote 3 new blog articles for his website, and then used snippets of those for his Google Business Profile and social accounts.
We had him sign up for our fave social sharing tool, Publer, so he could keep doing this in the future.
Grab Publer here - it’s awesome. 👈 click here
Step 10:
We helped him get local backlinks including:
His local chamber of commerce (small cost to join).
A local networking group (small cost to join).
A real estate agent he works with from time to time.
Then….
Our job was done, and within the month, that Google result looked a LOT better.
Now - some disclaimers:
This won’t work as quickly for everyone, a lot depends on your competition, where you are based etc.
SEO (ranking higher on Google), will often involve monthly work for content creation, link building etc. This process we’ve described can get you only so far.
Feel free to undertake this process yourself OR - hire us to do it for you, we charge well under $1K for this, and we are biased but we think every website owner needs this done!
